The Shakespeare Centre Presents
TOWARDS PERFORMANCE
A special Intensive (three classes per week for two weeks) to explore techniques in building a Shakespearean performance.
In the past, our focus has largely been on in-class progress and audition coaching. Now we take it up a few notches to performance level work.
Techniques will include:
1. Physical and Vocal Fitness
2. Behaviour – how to get away from the cliché – exploring status and attitude
3. In-depth text exploration
4. “Dropping in” for emotional depth
5. Laban technique for rehearsal flexibility solid choice making for performance*
*Laban, is a system created by dancer/ choreographer, Rudolph Laban, for dancers which has been adopted by actors as a movement based training or method. It informs the actor in many ways. You become aware of your own subtle and obvious physicality in everyday life. It forces you to explore a new range of movement you may not be accustomed to or comfortable with. It enables recognition and understanding of where and how thought, emotion, and intention live in the body and how it is expressed simultaneously through text and character.
The goal will be for the students to build a “toolbox” of techniques, which they can draw from as needed.
Note: We wish to stage a chamber-sized showcase production in the near future, to celebrate our fourth birthday, possibly at the new PAL theatre. This class would be an excellent tune-up for that project!
Requirements: two contrasting, memorized Shakespearean monologues from any play (gender-bending ok).
Deadline for registration is February 12, 2008 – all details below.
