Waiting For The Parade
presented by The Belleville Theatre Guild
Feb 14-March3
A contemporary classic by one of Canada’s best known international playwrights, John Murrell. Set in Calgary in the 1940’s, it is a character drama about five women who gather to work for the war effort.
It is based on a series of interviews conducted by the author. In a series of episodic vignettes, each woman tells her story, as they survive the war. It is an honest play that captures the texture of ordinary hopes and despair.
The production opens on February 14th and runs through March 3rd at the Pinnacle Playhouse. Rehearsals have been underway for several months. Director Mary Saunders, a seasoned director making her debut at the BTG has assembled a cast that has been very supportive of one another. Saunders said “It has been wonderful watching their confidence grow as they breathed into the characters they have adopted. There are times I sit in the audience and my hairs stand on end with the emotional risk that each of these women are willing to invest.†The women fold bandages, dance the jitterbug, paint stockings with seams on their legs and sing familiar hits from the era, including “Lili Marlene†and “The White Cliffs of Dover†There are a few familiar faces to the playhouse stage.
Audience members will recognize Heather Muir and Nancy Garrod. April Stuckless is performing for her second time with the BTG. Returning after some time is actress Eileen Carlton and the Guild welcomes newcomer Tamara Szwedo. Waiting For The Parade is this year’s entry to the Eastern Ontario Drama League Festival.
